Riverside Skatepark Redux

After making a trip to the newly refurbished (and, might we add, fabulously so) Riverside skatepark, we tracked down the above 411 segment celebrating the original park’s opening from shortly before we started skating. It’s cool to see that the excitement a new park brings is something that spans across time, and the pride these guys had for their city and its new park.

Although opinions remain divided within the VP circle regarding how good the old Riverside park actually was (especially after years of neglect), skaters in the city had good reason to celebrate when the park originally opened in 1996. Riverside was, in fact, NYC’s first official skatepark – bucking the nationwide skatepark boom that placed a prefab parks in countless communities across the country by at least couple years.
